Heart Failure in America
Heart failure is on the rise in America. Sounds bad, doesn’t it? The fact that heart failure is on the rise actually reflects three success stories: 1). We are treating heart attack patients earlier and more definitively than in the past; 2). We are diagnosing heart failure earlier; 3) We are treating heart failure better.
Look at the numbers: Each year about 300,000 people die from heart failure. Each year about 600,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed. Simple math shows that we have an increasing population of people with heart failure with a static hospital base to care for them. There are over five million Americans today with heart failure. There lies the rub.
Payors are paying less and less. Heart failure patients require hospital care from time to time. No one is ever cured of heart failure. So the readmission rate for heart failure tends to be high. Toward the end of life, the length of stay in the hospital tends to be long. Hospitals have a triple whammy: 1). Decreasing rembursement; 2). Increasing admissions with a high readmission rate in a disease where there is no cure; 3). Hospital length of stay increases that reflect the natural progression of the disease.
What can a hospital do?
An organized and systematic approach to hospital care for heart failure patient is needed. AMC Registry, Inc. has a long history of providing clinical process improvement services in the cardiovascular arena. Log on to our website and take our survey, Heart Failure, America Speaks. Results will be presented at during our free national webinar on March 26.
