So, I'm driving to work this morning, drearily listening to my fav sports talk show, Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio. I enjoy the show because of the great banter between the two hosts (they play their parts well - klutzy metrosexual and retired linebacker. Today, their show was dedicated to raising money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Mike and Mike had donated the opportunity to have them do a live show at your house.
After announcing that Marta had won that experience with a winning donation/bid of $57,100, Mike and Mike then introduced 2 more individuals who were on the phone. Turns out these guys were the CEO and CFO of Medical City Children's Hospital. They offered to match the bid and asked Mike and Mike if they'd also come do a show at their hospital.
Now, I've been some pretty progressive and ballsy hospital execs in my day, but these guys rock. Not only did they think of this great idea, not only did they give generously out of their own pockets, not only did they conspire to do it together, not only were they desiring to give their patients a lifetime memory, but they also really did not know if Mike and Mike were even able to do such a thing - i.e. add another live show at another location - completely not what this was set up for. They basically put themselves (and their hospital) out there.
Mike and Mike responded beautifully - they committed to do it even if it ruffled the feathers of the "suits" upstairs. And amazingly, after the commercial break, everyone was totally on board.
These two hospital execs come out as heroes. Mike and Mike and ESPN are big winners here, too. Kids with cancer get an experience of a lifetime. And hey, let's not forget the big winner: cancer research - $57,100 of it. Way to expand the pie, guys.
Makes me wonder, though - will I ever hear the words "hospital CFO" on ESPN radio ever again?
