Get ready for a health revolution?

    May 1st, 2006

From the makers of AOL, Revolution Health is starting to make some waves in the healthcare industry.

Two things that I've been watching. When these very smart growth-obsessed, value-obsessed people with $$$$ look to invest in healthcare, who do they bring in to manage their business? And what businesses interest them the most?

This week, we got a glimpse into the 1st question, with a press release on Revolution Health's management team (previously, we only knew who their executive team were). And they are:

Jeffery Gruen, former UnitedHealth Exec, now RH's President of Care
Robert Goodman, former Informed Medical Communications CEO/Prez/Chairman, now RH's President of Content and Commerce
Jim Bramson, former AOL chief counsel, assumes the same role for RH
Anna Slomovic, former SRA Chief Privacy Officer, assumes the same role for RH
Michael Singer, former Microsoft exec, now RH's SVP for Corporate Development

Since I haven't heard of any of these folks, I really can't say much except that these are accomplished, senior leaders from large, established, multi-unit business players - i.e. these folks are business managers not entrepreneurs (Case has enough entrepreneurism for the entire team). I'm also curious to find out who they'll tap to lead their "coverage" business.

The more interesting thing is to take a look at the impressive list of companies they've acquired a stake in. While it's still too early to see where they're headed, based on their acquisition pattern, I would bet that they're betting that consumerism will envelop healthcare. People will want better information and interfaces (i.e. their content biz area), people will want it quicker, easier, and more conveniently (i.e. their care biz area that's focused on retail settings), and people will want an easier pay to pay for it (i.e. their coverage biz).

I'm REALLY interested in seeing what kind of "health portal" they are constructing. They've already made 4 acquisitions in this area. By leveraging the clinical content of myDNA, the doctor & test scheduling capacity of 1800Schedule, the personal health record & expense tracking tools from SimoHealth, and the peer-to-peer interactiveness of Wondir, maybe we are talking about a real health information revolution. Imagine a portal where patients can ask each other for advice, look up expert's opinions & research, keep track of their own history, schedule an appointment with a local doctor, sign up for health coverage (RH's coverage that is), see their test results, and then track all the expenses as well?

Also, watch out for their retail healthcare shops. They've already acquired a stake in InterFit (a medical test service company) and RediClinic (retail clinic in Texas). If these small companies perform, get ready for $$$ to be poured in for rapid expansion.

Keep your eye out on Revolution. As they say, they swing for the fences.

This is interesting. I've worked in health care most of my life and know that it is a different kind of business than anything else. There is so much worry about law suites for giving advice and Hippa (sp?) for privacy of information, it's been very difficult for the healthcare to be brought into the technology like other businesses. I am eager to see some improvements if possible.

Am I to understand that Colin Powell has joined your team? If so I have been asked because of my service in the Army and easy backround check for you guys to deliver a letter to him . Of course it will not be sealed and is regarding your team of Health Revolutionists. Our chairman is a revolutionary foot health pioneer and has led the way for over twenty years in resourcing plans for healthier feet. This is not a solicitation of any sort. Please reply to me.

I would like to encourage you to review more about our product ehealthxchange.com, which I believe you will find, addresses what we consider to be without question the answer to the future demands that individuals will have with regard to how they manage their HSA or high deductible healthcare products.

As more and more employers force the responsibility for managing healthcare dollars onto the employee/patient in the form of higher deductible insurance products, the consumer (by default) becomes the person responsible for sourcing quality, affordable healthcare, prepayment of services in advance, and making an appointment online. Truly “Healthcare on their terms”. Currently there is no one solution that can provide that service. The ability to ‘search, compare and buy’ healthcare services online 24x7.

Enter ehealthxchange.com (www.ehealthxchange.com); formed 18 months ago by a highly respected visionary from the Blue Cross/Blue Shield stable, Ken Sellers has over 20 years healthcare experience, unquestioned passion for this company, and the drive that has brought the concept to within months of going to market. At this time we are scheduled to go live with the product in October, having completed beta testing at several Miami based physician locations and user testing from the consumer side of the site.

Without doubt, this consumer driven healthcare site, we believe, will transform control from the Insurance Carriers to the consumer, and provide significant process efficiencies to the physician’s offices, catapulting office practices into the 21st century. However painful that may be! This empowers the consumer significantly in providing more leverage with the medical practices to demand higher quality, more punctual office visits etc, quite frankly - healthcare on their terms.

Please review our website for further information (and for a product demonstration); I would greatly appreciate your valued feedback. Our site will undergo a revision in focus (from information about who we are for potential consumers, physicians and investors) to a more focused “reasons why you (physicians and consumers) should sign-up” early in October.

We are truly excited by this and have been very successful in obtaining half of our capital target from pre-revenue investors which has been used to assist in concluding the development of the product, and are now seeking further investors to assist in the marketing and further enhancements that we are anxious to develop.

Your comments and observations would be appreciated.
