From the makers of AOL, Revolution Health is starting to make some waves in the healthcare industry.
Two things that I've been watching. When these very smart growth-obsessed, value-obsessed people with $$$$ look to invest in healthcare, who do they bring in to manage their business? And what businesses interest them the most?
This week, we got a glimpse into the 1st question, with a press release on Revolution Health's management team (previously, we only knew who their executive team were). And they are:
Jeffery Gruen, former UnitedHealth Exec, now RH's President of Care
Robert Goodman, former Informed Medical Communications CEO/Prez/Chairman, now RH's President of Content and Commerce
Jim Bramson, former AOL chief counsel, assumes the same role for RH
Anna Slomovic, former SRA Chief Privacy Officer, assumes the same role for RH
Michael Singer, former Microsoft exec, now RH's SVP for Corporate Development
Since I haven't heard of any of these folks, I really can't say much except that these are accomplished, senior leaders from large, established, multi-unit business players - i.e. these folks are business managers not entrepreneurs (Case has enough entrepreneurism for the entire team). I'm also curious to find out who they'll tap to lead their "coverage" business.
The more interesting thing is to take a look at the impressive list of companies they've acquired a stake in. While it's still too early to see where they're headed, based on their acquisition pattern, I would bet that they're betting that consumerism will envelop healthcare. People will want better information and interfaces (i.e. their content biz area), people will want it quicker, easier, and more conveniently (i.e. their care biz area that's focused on retail settings), and people will want an easier pay to pay for it (i.e. their coverage biz).
I'm REALLY interested in seeing what kind of "health portal" they are constructing. They've already made 4 acquisitions in this area. By leveraging the clinical content of myDNA, the doctor & test scheduling capacity of 1800Schedule, the personal health record & expense tracking tools from SimoHealth, and the peer-to-peer interactiveness of Wondir, maybe we are talking about a real health information revolution. Imagine a portal where patients can ask each other for advice, look up expert's opinions & research, keep track of their own history, schedule an appointment with a local doctor, sign up for health coverage (RH's coverage that is), see their test results, and then track all the expenses as well?
Also, watch out for their retail healthcare shops. They've already acquired a stake in InterFit (a medical test service company) and RediClinic (retail clinic in Texas). If these small companies perform, get ready for $$$ to be poured in for rapid expansion.
Keep your eye out on Revolution. As they say, they swing for the fences.
