Creating optimal healing environments: Connectivity

January 30th, 2013

by Scott Kashman

Connectivity is the key to our culture, as well as intentionally achieving our business objectives.

At my organization, it certainly supports our effort as an optimal healing environment (OHE), following the framework of the Samueli Institute.

The focus is on a person-centered approach. As individuals find deeper meaning and deeper purpose in their work, our patients and families benefit greatly. Frankly, we all do.

The key OHE elements include:

  • Developing healing intention - Ensure expectations and experience levels are clear
  • Experiencing personal wholeness - Ensure all aspects of the care and support team are incorporated into person-centered care
  • Cultivating healing relationships - Provide compassion and empathy
  • Creating healing organizations - Ensure teamwork in place, processes support need and the leadership team is engaged with emphasis on healing and curing
  • Practicing healthy lifestyles - Ensure members of the healthcare team and staff are engaged in their own self-care
  • Applying collaborative medicine - Encourage the integration of traditional medical approaches with integrative modalities
  • Building healing spaces - Promote health and wellness through the physical space
  • Fostering ecological sustainability - Follow ecological sustainability practices including recycling, "green" products and packaging reduction

Since our journey towards an optimal healing environment involves practicing healthy lifestyles and enhancing care through social support and communication, I invite everyone to join me and others on dailymile. The site's mantra: We're a community who encourage and inspire one another as we achieve our goals.

I encourage you to do the same. We can utilize it as one more way to connect and support each other as we achieve some of our personal health goals.

A friend and former colleague shared this challenge with me and I'd like to do the same with you:

Are you willing to share your Personal Health Goal(s) we can monitor throughout the year? No doubt even sharing this is uncomfortable and that is what helps each of us reach our full potential. In turn, our organizations reach their full potential in which we, our patients and families are the beneficiaries. What are your Personal Health Goals based on one of the following five categories:

  • Spiritual
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Intellectual
  • Physical

Connectivity with intention and purpose is vital to your cultural transformation. Enjoy your evolution.
