Healthcare reform: What would Steve Jobs do?

    February 18th, 2010

    by Anthony Cirillo

I had an "a-ha" moment after reading a recent New York Times article about Apple CEO Steve Jobs: He should lead healthcare reform!

    Consider:
Jobs creates "edited products that cut through complexity, by consciously leaving things out." Who better to simplify patient and family experiences? Instead of an accountable care organization, Jobs could create "Your Accountable Care Organization," with just what you need when you need it.

    [More:]

Jobs doesn't design products by committee or based on market research data, but through a heavy reliance on "tenacity, patience, belief and instinct."

Healthcare professionals get so log-jammed pouring over metrics that we end up suffering from paralysis by analysis. Jobs steps away and puts himself in the user's (read: patient's) head.

He reaches for what people only dream about or, even better, haven't even considered dreaming about. After all, who even thought of loading thousands of songs and album cover art onto something smaller than the size of a TV remote? Who ever imagined that patients could go to their doctor's office and simply walk to the next room to visit a specialist?

Jobs surrounds himself with exceptional people who create "a-ha" products. His engineers and designers aren't just 30 percent better than their peers, but "ten times better," he says.

If you think I'm being too simplistic and short on details, you're right. But perhaps we need leaders who have a right to be somewhat dictatorial because their vision is so strong as to not be denied. That might actually move healthcare organizations forward faster.

And perhaps all of us need to realize that accountability starts with each and every one of us taking control of our health so we don't need the system at all!

And so that brings us back to Steve: Last I heard, the top job at CMS was still available. What do you say, Steve?

Anthony Cirillo, FACHE, ABC, is president of Fast Forward Consulting, which specializes in patient- and person-centered care and strategic marketing for healthcare facilities.

I like the theory of someone with that qualities that you like about Steve Jobs running CMS.

However, the other part of Steve Job's legacy is incompatibility and monopoly.

So, we would have to buy an iHeart, an iBrain, an iThermometer, etc in order to use any of his products. Otherwise, they just wouldn't work.

Hey Andrew that is true. But standardization is what it's all about right! And then some would contend we are heading toward socialized medicine, perhaps an offshoot of the Jobs model too. Thanks for commenting.

Forget leading health reform, he should be president! He seems like a guy who really gets things done BETTER and for less. Cut through the red tape and prosper...

I like your ah ha thinking. Simplicity is really the key element in all innovation! Instead of quick fixes, perhaps we should all be dedicating our time, not to waiting in doctors offices but practicing self accountability.

One of Job's success fundamentals was trial and error. Healthcare reform needs to allow new models to be attempted without penalty of lawsuits or loss of income for not following the "rules".

    Very interesting components to discuss.

Standardization or individualization? Who sets the standard? Is the standard based on a bell curve? How about the folks not at the top of the bell? Is the standardization taking into account all aspects of healing (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, socio-economic)?

Should reform be drilled down from the top or are we better served to be built up from the "bottom".

Health care and people are complex evolving systems. Complexity science would suggest the better solutions are from the grass-roots.

The grass roots efforts is all of us. All of us taking accountability, control, responsibility, facing consequences, volunteering those who need assistance, and so much more.

Helping ourselves and helping our communities from the grass roots is our obligation and be it Steve Jobs or someone else...it is not about them...it is about you and I.

Tom - I whole heartily agree with your statement - The grass roots efforts is all of us. All of us taking accountability, control, responsibility, facing consequences, volunteering those who need assistance, and so much more.

But we have become such an entitled culture that many think it's OK not to take self-responsibility because there will be a pill, medical device or procedure to fix it. And then add a marketing machine of fast food messages and we have the obesity epidemic. And no one wants the health care system until it is their crisis.

Very few re-emerge after the crisis to actually want to help fix the system.

My fear is that nothing will happen. And that reform is not reform but merely perceived access to care for more people who then will face a system that is ill-prepared to handle them, making experiences and outcome even worse.

We can all learn from your approach. Perhaps True North is a big part of the solution.

I just finished reading this blog and it really makes you think how innovative leaders have to be to reform the system. Steve Jobs is a forward thinking individual who should be sought out by those on Capital Hill for ideas and suggestions. I believe he would implement ideas that could help reform the system.
